Crested Butte Panthers hockey gets in early skates in Durango

Coaches impressed

The Crested Butte Panthers girl’s hockey team traveled to Durango this past weekend for some pre-season action. Eighteen girls made the trip, which included a warm-up hour practice and four scrimmage games.
Head coaches Tony Lambert, GJ Santelli and John Dethloff were very impressed with the girls’ hustle and clean style of play. Assistant coaches Todd Carroll and Tim Seifert noted, “You could see the difference in the improvement of the girls who were able to attend summer camps.”
After a shaky first period in the opening game, the girls settled down and played solid hockey in the remaining games. Goaltenders Morgan Osterling (U14) and Monika Olesen (U12) had great action come at them from a strong Durango squad.
Crested Butte went 1-2-1 for the early four game exhibition series. Goal scorers for the Panthers were Hailey Pike, Ali McGuire, Ali Sunter, Mallory Mikeska, Kaitlyn Seifert and Elizabeth Stepanek.
Up next for the U12 Panthers is the Fall Face Off in Aspen November 7-9. This is a very big tournament featuring some of the strong teams in last year’s MSGHL state championships. Crested Butte is scheduled to play Colorado Select, Steamboat Skiers and two-time defending state champs Aspen Leafs.
On November 15-16 RMHS is holding the former Breckenridge fall camp in Gunnison at the brand-new indoor facility. Contact RMHS.com for information or the Crested Butte recreation department.
