“A great weekend of racing…”

The Crested Butte Mountain Sports Team (CBMST) J3 racers dominated the field at the Rocky Mountain Division sanctioned age class giant slalom races on Buckley Saturday and Sunday, January 3-4.

The Crested Butte Ski Club, CBMST and Crested Butte Mountain Resort joined forces to host the two days of racing, attracting racers from teams throughout the state in the J5 (ages 9-10), J4 (ages 11-12) and J3 (ages 13-14) age categories.
“I don’t think it really could have gone any better,” says CBMST director Drew Cesati. “It was a great weekend of racing.”
For the boys, Cole Byron scorched the course, owning the J3 field with four first-place finishes in four races.
Hannah Watt-Sax and Annie Ochs led the charge for the CBMST women over the weekend, trading off spots on the podium.
Watt-Sax recorded three top-five finishes out of four races, including a first place, and Ochs had four top-three finishes, including a first place as well.
“I think Cole made a breakthrough in his skiing during the Christmas camps and is executing on race day,” says Cesati. “Annie and Hannah just battled it out all weekend. We were psyched with what we saw. I thought we held our own.”
Mountain sports team alpine racers are now hitting the road for races across the state, with some spending the week doing speed training in Keystone, and others setting their sights on a J3 Junior Olympic speed events qualifier in Aspen January 17-19.
