BOZAR selects 2008 Project of the Year: Dogwood

The Board of Zoning and Architectural Review (BOZAR) recently held their annual year end review to consider the completed projects from the 2008 building season.

Members of the public, Crested Butte town staff and building community viewed a presentation of projects in the following categories:
New Residential, Accessory Dwellings, Accessory Buildings, Residential Remodels, New Commercial and Commercial Remodels.
The board focused on the massing, site design, exterior materials and overall architecture in their consideration of the projects and selection of the most outstanding for 2008.
In the Commercial Remodel category, “The Dogwood” at 309 Third Street won the Project of the Year award for 2008. Owners Doug and Phoebe Pederson, architect Kent Cowherd and builder Kevin Pederson put tremendous effort into restoring this historic “shotgun” building to excellent shape and giving it a new lease on life. Given the deteriorating condition of the building and absence of a proper foundation, the Dogwood crew took painstaking efforts to preserve those parts of the exterior and interior of the historic building that were salvageable and restore it to its original character. Their efforts are the definition of effective historic preservation and were a labor of love. The outcome is a vibrant, stable and attractive building that greatly enhances the Historic District of downtown Crested Butte.
In the Residential Remodel category, Steve Merkle’s creek-side single-family residence at 15 Whiterock received an Honorable Mention award. Designed by Dan Murphy and built by Mick Holgate, the Merkle home was not only a successful remodel and addition, but the work required to make the retaining wall on Coal Creek functional and attractive was extensive. The additions to the home blended effectively with the scale and style of the existing structure. The home and building site were both dramatically improved through this renovation.
Shelby Futch’s home at 610 First Street also received an Honorable Mention award in the Residential Remodel category. The additions to the single-family home match the scale of the existing structure well, and the change in color and gable detail brought new life to the home. Designed and built by Wayne Koncan, this project is an excellent demonstration of an effective and appropriately scaled addition. The board noted that it was difficult to differentiate the addition from the existing structure, which is indicative of a very effective design and matching of materials.
Steve Jennison’s Accessory Dwelling at 203 Butte was recognized with an Honorable Mention award for its effective massing and unique design. The relationship between the various building modules was enabled by the use of a one-car garage, which allowed architect Andrew Hadley and builder Norm Bardeen to utilize a thoughtful blend of architectural elements other than those typically seen in a newer 1,000-square-foot accessory. The dwelling combines traditional roof and building forms with more contemporary design elements to create a unique building.
In the Accessory Building Category, Garth and Molly Fort’s out building located at 507 Gothic received Honorable Mention recognition. Designed by Michael Helland and built by Jack Huckins, the storage shed was noted for its appropriate mass and scale in relation to the primary home. It reflects the historic use of out buildings seen throughout town and was recognized by the board as an excellent example of scaled-down Accessory Building design.
The board and building department staff thank the building and design community for another successful year of construction in Crested Butte. The architectural uniqueness of town owes a great deal to their hard work. Special thanks to the following architects, designers and contractors for their hard work in 2008: Pricilla Banks, Norm Bardeen, Bearcat Construction, Todd Carroll, Kent Cowherd, Architect, Equity Builders, Jimmy Faust Construction, Fran Guy, Andrew Hadley, Architect, Michael Helland, Architect, Holbrook & Smith, G.C., Mick Holgate Construction, Jack Huckins Construction, Chris Klein Construction, Wayne Koncan, Eric Lamb, Eileen Langsfeld, Dave Monte, John Mortel, Dan Murphy, Architect, Norton Designworks, Joey Olsen Construction, Kevin Pederson, Putchek Construction, Carl Reiman, Randy Swift, Swift Construction, Mike Weil, Green Robin Builders, Wright Angle Construction, Deuce Wynes.
