Panthers battle against Colorado Selects hockey

U14 on fire

The Crested Butte Panthers girls’ hockey team traveled to Denver last weekend to battle Colorado Selects in MSGHL (Mountain States Girls Hockey League) league play.
Crested Butte’s U12 team showed signs of rust as they lost both contests 0-2 and 2-6. MSGHL U12 league point leader and Selects captain Jocelyn Gacek had six points with three goals and three assists versus the Panther squad. The U12 squad hopes to bounce back this weekend with league games in Gunnison vs. NCYHL Eagles.
The defending MSGHL State Champions Crested Butte U14 team took on Colorado Selects U14 team in a rematch of last season’s state championship game. The first game ended in a 0-0 tie with Monica Olesen stopping all 20 shots! Panther defense consisting of Maddie Lambert, Cassidy Dodds, Bradley Santelli and Anika Kooiman were tough to get by.
The second game was very physical. The Panther squad was settled down by coach Tony Lambert reminding the girls, “use your skates, girls, and out-hustle them.”
Ali Sunter and Ali McGuire had two points apiece and Hailey Pike scored the winning goal. Anika Kooiman iced the game with five minutes to play with a full ice rush to seal the 4-2 win. Olesen again was brilliant in net and is in second place in the MSGHL league with a 1.00 goals against average.
The U14 team does not resume league play until mid-January. All the girls and parents were treated to the Team USA vs. Canada contest at Magness Arena on Saturday night. USA dropped the contest 2-4.
