Ballots are in the mail this week

Let the games begin

The first Tuesday in November used to officially be Election Day. You can still go to a polling place Tuesday, November 2 and cast your vote in this fall’s election, but now you also have several alternatives.
You can vote by mail, and it appears that many voters in Gunnison County like that option. The Gunnison County Clerk’s office sent out 4,115 mail ballots this past Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. If you have requested a mail ballot, you should have it or receive it very soon.
“Everything is in the mail that has been applied for, but we are still getting requests from people wanting to vote by mail,” said deputy election clerk Cathy Simillion. “We can mail a ballot up until [Tuesday] October 26. Or a voter can come in here and personally request a mail ballot through the Friday before the election.”
Mail ballots can be sent back to the county clerk via the U.S. Postal System but must be received by Tuesday, November 2. They can also be dropped off at the Crested Butte Town Hall or at the county clerk’s office in Gunnison.
You can also vote early. Starting Monday, October 18 you can take a trip to the clerk’s office in the Blackstock Government Building in Gunnison. That office will be open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. every weekday, including during the lunch hour.
So while you can’t cast a vote for President, you can vote for the governor, a congressman, candidates for the state legislature, and a county commissioner. And you can do it between now and November 2.
