Kids take tennis talents on road

Coombs win first title

On Saturday, September 25 Austin Coombs and Jamey Spahn competed in the Southern Colorado Satellite Tennis Tournament at The Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs.
Spahn lost her first round match to Kylie A. Simons 6-4, 6-0, but made her way to the finals of the consolation draw. In the finals, Spahn, whose 13th birthday was Monday, lost 6-3, 6-4 to Victoria VanDeVeer, nearly 15 years old, in a nervous but tightly contested battle. This is Spahn’s second consolation tournament runner-up finish in as many tries.
Coombs lost his first round match 6-4, 7-5 to Tom Hudson in the Boy’s 12+under division. This loss also put Coombs in the consolation draw where he made his way to the finals, beating Gus A. Bosch 6-1, 6-0 for his first consolation tournament victory in only two attempts.
“Both Austin and Jamey are improving daily. With continued dedication and hard work, both kids will soon be making their way into the later rounds of the main draw’s and will soon be putting Crested Butte on the map as a place for Junior Tennis,” says Andy Booth, director of tennis at The Club at Crested Butte.
Both Spahn and Coombs travelled to Fort Collins, Colo. for the weekend of October 8-10 to participate in the Lewis Tennis Autumn Satellite Tournament. Coombs played in the Boy’s 12+under division, while Spahn was in the Girls 14+under division.
