WSCU women’s soccer season closes

Future looks bright for young team

It was a historic season for the Western State Colorado University women’s soccer team. In their first year, the Mountaineer women’s soccer team went 1-14.
Despite winning only one game, the young Mountaineer team showed improvement and competed in nearly every game. Wins were tough for WSCU, as they had one of the toughest schedules in the nation and played all but three games on the road.
“We didn’t get a few results we thought we could have won,” head coach Jeremy Clevenger said. “However, I think we exceeded expectations and have a good base for our program to build upon.”
The Mountaineers’ lone win came against Washburn University on October 21. The Mountaineers were down 1-0 going into the second half. Sadie Stark (freshman Milliken, Colo.) scored two goals seven minutes apart to give WSCU the first win in program history.
Elyza Montano (freshman, El Sobrante, Calif.) led the Mountaineers in 2012 with three goals scored and seven total points. Tanisha Anderson (freshman, Arvada, Colo.) and Shannon Lynott (senior, Clovis, Calif.) led the team in assists with two. Meghan Jedrzejewski (freshman, Longmont, Colo.) was in net every game for the Mountaineers and compiled more than 100 saves on the season.
The Mountaineers ended the season last Sunday against the Fort Hays State University Tigers. WSCU lost the match 1-0 before heading back to Gunnison.
WSCU will lose only one player, Lynott, to graduation. The Mountaineers will have a more experienced team next year and more home games.
The Mountaineers will be full-time members in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference next season, which will mean less traveling and more home games.
