WSCU women’s soccer team wins big

First home game Friday at 4 p.m.

In just their second season as a program, the Western State Colorado University (WSCU) women’s soccer team won their first game of the 2013 season on Friday, September 6. The Mountaineers came back from a 1-0 first half deficit to defeat UT-Permian Basin 4-1 in Santa Fe, N.M.
In just one game, the Western women’s soccer team tied their win total from last season.

The Mountaineers (1-0, 0-0 RMAC) made a dramatic second half comeback, led by Emily Burton (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) who scored two goals in the first four minutes of the second stanza.

Katelyn Mardeusz (Fr., Cave Creek, Ariz.) and Sarah Mercer (Fr., Grand Junction, Colo.) each added goals to put the game out of reach.

Western outshot Permian Basin 11-8 and goalie Meghan Jedrzejewski came up with three big saves in the second half to maintain the Mountaineer victory.

WSCU then headed to Santa Fe, N.M. on Sunday to face Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU). The Mountaineers gave up two early first-half goals in a 2-0 loss to Eastern New Mexico University.

Sunday, the experienced ENMU squad thwarted the Mountaineers attempts at a comeback.

Emily Burton (Fr., Aurora, Colo.), who scored two goals on Friday, led the team in shots on Sunday but was denied on both attempts.

The Mountaineers return to Gunnison for the home opener against Texas A&M–International on Friday at 4 p.m. from Gateway Field.
