Lady Titans fall short of massive upset

“We went toe-to-toe with the third best team in the state”

There’s no question the Crested Butte Lady Titans basketball team is on a roll. Fresh off an upset win over South Park last week and then rolling to a 42-24 win over Antonito on Friday, they looked to up the ante against the Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds on Saturday, February 15.
Sangre is in first place in the Southern Peaks league and is the third ranked 2A program in the state. They’ve dominated nearly every other team in the league and have their sights set on a run at the state title. As a result, they came into Mt. Olympus looking like they were ready to roll and the first two minutes played out like that.
Sangre built a quick 8-2 lead before coach Mike Moran called a timeout to reel his team back into the game.
“It was just a matter of regaining our confidence, settling them down and getting them refocused,” says Moran.
The break played out as hoped as the Lady Titans put the breaks on Sangre’s offense and Ali McGuire drained a three-pointer to close the quarter, pulling the Lady Titans to within four.
Sangre continued to throw players at Shannon Costello in an effort to slow her down, and ultimately slow down Crested Butte, but the Lady Titans have developed several offensive threats to make the necessary adjustments. As Costello handled the pressure, it opened up her teammates and they came through with a number of big buckets.
