Women’s soccer notches last second win

Remain undefeated

As time expired in overtime, Western State Colorado University’s Francesca Rand (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) lined up for a corner kick. Rand placed the ball past the outstretched arms of the Adams State University goalkeeper with no time remaining on the clock. The Mountaineers defeated Adams State 2-1, earning their fifth win and remaining unbeaten in the season.

“It was an amazing game,” Western head coach Jeremy Clevenger said. “There’s no better way to finish in that manner, especially when it’s homecoming. I’m proud of the team’s effort and will to continue fighting throughout the game.”

The second consecutive overtime match and second straight at home looked like it would go the way of the others and end in a tie. However, the Mountaineers never gave up and had their best opportunity with 10 seconds remaining.

Rand leads the Mountaineers in scoring with five goals on the season. Rand’s corner kick goal against Adams was the third time Rand has scored off a corner this season.

Western (5-0-3, 2-0-2 RMAC) got out to a fast start, scoring after just 2:11. Nicole Giebler (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) dribbled past the charging Adams State goalkeeper and placed the ball into the back of the net, scoring her second goal of the season.

Adams State (1-6-1, 0-3-1 RMAC) got a goal back, just before halftime. The Grizzlies’ Courtney Miknis launched a rocket from 18 yards out, placing it past Western goalkeeper Meghan Jedrzejewski (Jr., Longmont, Colo.). That goal was the first against Jedrzejewski in 634:01. Jedrzejewski was last scored upon in the Mountaineers’ first match of the season against Eastern New Mexico on September 4. Jedrzejewski made 11 saves in Western’s win.

While the first half was back and forth, the second was controlled by the visiting Grizzlies. ASU outshot Western 11-4 in the second half.

Western did a good job limiting ASU’s chances in overtime. The Mountaineers were awarded three corner kicks, while ASU had none.

The Mountaineers will continue the home stand this Friday when they host Colorado Mesa University at 2 p.m.
