First meeting is a work session not a public hearing

The first of many Gunnison County planning meetings evaluating the proposal for affordable housing at the corner of Brush Creek Road and Highway 135 will take place Friday. The county Planning Commission is holding a work session on the proposal starting at 9 a.m. A site visit to the property is planned for one o’clock that afternoon.
The morning meeting will take place at the County Commissioner Meeting Room in the Gunnison County Courthouse. The room can accommodate many more people than the regular Planning Commission Meeting Room in the Blackstock Government Center.
The developers are proposing a 240-rental unit complex on 14 acres. Of the 240 units, 156 would have some sort of deed restriction that would require residents to make less than 180 percent of the Area Median Income. The other 84 units will be rented at free market rates with no deed restrictions.
Given that the meeting is a work session, the planning commissioners will discuss and evaluate the data within the sketch plan proposal. The Planning Commission is not required to take public comment at this meeting.
Gunnison County director of community and economic development Cathie Pagano said the IT department was creating “a specific email address so people can direct their comments to that site and we will bundle those comments and distribute them to the Planning Commission prior to each meeting. This is to allow an avenue for people to submit comments, questions, concerns in advance of the actual public hearing while also still allowing the Planning Commission time to devote to working through the application.”
A copious amount of information that is part of the sketch plan proposal is available on the county website at gunnisoncounty.org. Comments from so-called referral agencies such as the towns of Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte along with the RTA, CBMR and the Gunnison Valley Regional Housing Authority have been received and are part of the record.
