Mini- building boom shaping up for summer

On pace with previous years

By Kristy Acuff

The hammers will continue to swing this summer as construction remains on pace through both ends of the valley. New construction of single-family homes along with a few commercial projects and remodels will keep workers busy as in recent years past.

So far this year, the town of Crested Butte has issued 40 building permits, with 14 more on tap for the near future. Of those 14, nine are for new homes/remodels, four are for the town-build duplexes and one is for a large commercial project.

Down valley in Crested Butte South, the numbers are holding steady as well.

“We are in line with the past several years, approving 16 building projects so far,” writes Dom Eymere, association manager of the Crested Butte South POA. The Crested Butte South projects include seven single-family homes, three duplexes, a four-unit multi-family and one commercial mix-use project.

Gunnison County also continues to grow with new single-family homes and remodels. So far in May, the county has issued 12 permits for new homes and two for home remodels. This puts 2018 on par with May of last year with the same number of permits issued.

Mt. Crested Butte has issued two building permits for new construction along with 20 miscellaneous permits for remodels, additions and other construction. According to Carlos Velado, Mt Crested Butte community development director, “We are expecting four more new single-family residential builds in 2018, but nothing is certain. This includes the completion of the final unfinished foundation in the Wildhorse subdivision.”

As summer approaches, listen for the sound of hammers and nails up and down the valley.
