Musical treats for Arts Festival weekend

The show must go on

Keith Miller and David Malis headline TWO matinee concerts over Arts Fair weekend! Opera Lollipops and Broadway in the Butte, both originally scheduled in the new performance space at the Center for the Arts, will now be presented at Oh Be Joyful Church.

—Opera Lollipops, Friday, August 2, 7 p.m. Oh Be Joyful Church (625 Maroon Avenue)

Broadway in the Butte, Saturday, August 3, 5 p.m. Oh Be Joyful Church (625 Maroon Avenue)

Elizabeth Bond and Emily Bond are co-producing these shows on behalf of the Center for the Arts – to celebrate the building of the new facility. Originally slated to be presented in the new performance space, the concerts will now take place just down the road in Crested Butte at the newly renovated Oh Be Joyful Church.

Opera Lollipops (Aug 2) will showcase some of opera’s greatest hits by composers including Mozart, Puccini, and Verdi.  Even if you think you don’t know opera, you will recognize the tunes!  To begin the evening, Haydn’s short, sweet, and jolly Nelson Mass is being presented in commemoration of a fantastic, fondly remembered performance by Crested Butte singers and musicians in the late 1990’s in Crested Butte.

Broadway in the Butte (Aug 3) is an enchanting performance of musical theatre highlights for the WHOLE family! Lovers of show tunes will enjoy selections ranging from some of the great Broadway classics to hits from recent long-running shows.  With at least one song for everyone, this dazzling concert (beginning at 5 p.m.) will include numbers from Oklahoma!, The Music Man, Into the Woods, Les Misérables, Wicked, and many more! Famed Mead Metcalf, of the Crystal Palace in Aspen, makes a special appearance, performing selections from Kiss Me Kate.

A great number of musicians and soloists are returning to Crested Butte – including Keith Miller, David Malis, Derek Carden, David Rothman, Adam Bond, Sean Claire, Lane Lederer, Michael Galvin, Troy Raper, and many more! The Chamber Orchestra will be conducted by Derek Carden.

David Malis was the first American to win the prestigious Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, and led the Crested Butte Music Festival’s Opera Program for twelve years. Keith Miller has sung in over 350 performances at The Metropolitan Opera in New York. David Rothman was the co-founder and first Executive Director of the Crested Butte Music Festival. Derek Carden has returned to Crested Butte from London, UK for the past twelve years, musically directing a variety of musical and operatic productions for the Crested Butte Mountain Theatre and Union Congregational Church.
