Crested Butte man faces eight felonies

Arraignment set for October

The 35-year-old Crested Butte man arrested last week in a Garfield County sting operation focused on child prostitution appeared in court Tuesday. Jan Blewett is formally facing eight felony counts in connection with the case.

Because he allegedly solicited sex from two children under the age of 15, he faces multiple charges ranging from child prostitution solicitation to sexual assault of a victim under 15 to cybercrime of arranging for minor prostitution.

Blewett, a full-time firefighter with the Colorado River Fire Protection District in Rifle and a part-time fighter with the Crested Butte Fire Protection District, allegedly arranged to have sex at a Glenwood Springs hotel with two girls ages 13 and 14. But the arrangements were being made with undercover police agents and not the guardian of the children. Blewett was one of nine people arrested in the sting operation. He has been put on unpaid administrative leave by both fire departments.

Blewett’s next court hearing is scheduled for October 29 when he will be arraigned and can enter a plea on the charges.
