Human cause being investigated

Local fire suppression crews responded to a small fire west of Crested Butte over Labor Day weekend.

The fire was spotted on Sunday, September 6, and Gunnison Fire, Crested Butte Fire Department and the Forest Service all responded to the scene. Initial reports indicate that a couple of trees were on fire near the Ohio and Kebler Pass intersection.

According to Crested Butte fire chief Rob Weisbaum, the fire was considered to be about a quarter acre in size and was “contained” Sunday and considered “controlled” on Monday. The fire was not large and was not producing much smoke.

Weisbaum said the fire appears to be caused by people. The Forest Service is investigating the human-caused details of what started the outbreak.
