Crested Butte Mets take Little League Div. 1 title

Shock opponents in post season

The Crested Butte Mets swept through the playoffs in Gunnison on Monday, July 27 to take the Division 1 (9-10-year-old) title.
In the first game of the single-elimination tournament, the underdog Mets faced the first-place Gunnison Elks Team and put together the best game of the season to win 12-3 and advance to the championship game against the Gunnison blue team.
In the championship game, the Mets jumped to a one-run lead in the first inning and then pushed the score to 2-0 in the second inning. Gunnison scored to close the gap to within one in the third inning of a defensive battle. A three-run fourth inning rally by the Mets increased the score to 5-2. Solid defense in the bottom of the last inning held Gunnison to just one run and the Mets stunned Gunnison 5-3 to take the 2009 title.
The team finished its season with a 5-9 record overall, but undefeated in the playoffs, advancing from last place to first place. The boys saved their best baseball of the year for the playoffs.
The Mets put together solid defense, great pitching, good hitting and smart base running. The best thing is that every player contributed to the success. They played some great baseball.
A big “thank you” goes to those who cheered the team on in this week’s games—you’re as proud of your player as the team is.
“Thanks” to all of the parents for their support during the 2009 season. A special “thank you” to those parents who helped with rides to games, arranged for pizzas between double headers, took photos, and were “drafted” into service at practices and as base coaches in games.
And finally, a great big “thank you” to Lauren Alkire at the Crested Butte Parks and Rec office for helping the team pull it all together this year. Have a great summer and we’ll see you next year!
Way to go Mets!
