Western State cross-country teams rank second in region

Race at WSC Saturday, October 23

After a strong win at the Fort Hays State Tiger Open last Saturday, the Western State College men’s cross country team moved back into second in the latest Central Region rankings released this morning by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The women remained at No. 2 after their perfect score last weekend.
The men won their second team title of the season and placed five runners in the top eight of the overall results last Saturday. Western State had dropped down to No. 3 for two weeks after a second-place finish at the 25th Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder October 2.
The Western State women stayed at No. 2 in the region for the third consecutive week after their second win of the season with a perfect team score. Lauren Kleppin paced the Mountaineers with 16 minutes, 59.40 seconds on the five-kilometer course at Fort Hays State.
Both teams will compete in the Mountaineer Open Saturday in Gunnison for the final tune-up before the RMAC Championships on November 6. The women’s five-kilometer race begins at 11 a.m. before the men’s 7.4-kilometer race at 11:30 a.m.
