WSCU women’s soccer pulls off huge upset

Climb another spot in league standings

In just their second season as a program, the Western State Colorado University women’s soccer program upset the fifth-ranked Fort Lewis Skyhawks at Gateway Field by a score of 2-0. The win is the first Mountaineer win over a ranked opponent and the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory in program history.

Western (4-3, 1-2 RMAC) opened the scoring early in the second half, after a scoreless first half. Elise Boisnard (Fr., Lakewood, Colo.) took the ball from a long pass by Brianna Vega (So., Vallejo, Calif.) and went down the left side of the field. Boisnard lifted the ball over the keeper and found side netting to put the Mountaineers ahead 1-0 in the 51st minute.

The Skyhawks went on the attack after the goal and put consistent pressure on the Mountaineer defense. However, the Western defense was up to the task and helped add another Boisnard goal in the 79th minute as a great through-ball from Tanisha Anderson (So., Arvada, Colo.) found Boisnard streaking down the field. The keeper rushed Boisnard but was able to slide the ball past and score her second goal of the game.

Western hit the road on Sunday to face Adams State and came away with a valuable point on the road, tying Adams State 1-1.
Sadie Stark (So., Milliken, Colo.) scored the Mountaineers’ only goal of the game. Stark’s goal came off a perfectly struck half volley that found its way to the back of the net. Elise Boisnard (Fr., Lakewood, Colo.) provided the assist on the goal.
Western (4-3-1, 1-2-1 RMAC) moves ahead of ASU in the RMAC standings into sixth place. The Mountaineers will face Colorado Mesa on Friday, October 4 and then the fifth-place New Mexico Highlands on Sunday, October 6. Both games will be on the road.
