High Mountain Flyers Disc Golf Club opens the 2008 disc golf season with the High Mountain Invitational on Sunday, April 20 on the Western State campus.
The tournament is the first of four tournaments director Chris Brown has scheduled for the upcoming season, and it’s opening the season with a bang.
Brown worked diligently over the winter on numerous projects to enhance the local disc golf scene, starting with this tournament.
More than 70 local sponsors are lined up for the tournament, with prizes for a putting contest, longest drive competition as well as a hole in one contest, with a river raft up for grabs.
“It’s a beautiful raft,” says Brown.
Registration for the High Mountain Invitational will be held the day of the event at 10 a.m. just inside the gate above the Western State College Mountaineer Bowl.
Brown has three other tournaments scheduled for the 2008 season. The Battle at Big Mine II at the Big Mine course in Crested Butte on Sunday, June 10 is coming up next.
Following that, Brown brings a disc golf tournament to Crested Butte Mountain on July 20 and closes the tournament season with the Mixed Up Classic in Gunnison sometime in the early fall.
In addition, Brown is working on expanding the current nine-hole course on Crested Butte Mountain to an 18-hole format. He hopes to eventually get the course sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association.
“Hopefully I can attract the professional tour and get the course sanctioned,” says Brown.
While approval has been set for construction of the additional nine holes, Brown isn’t done. He is also working on a proposal for a course in Crested Butte South.
The tournament this weekend will start at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start. The awards ceremony and raffle will be held at Timbers in Gunnison following the conclusion of the tournament.

“There’s so much stuff I’ve got going on, it’s ridiculous,” says Brown. “Disc golf is going to be happening.”
