—Minor Impact Activity Watershed Permit—
Public Notice
Town of Crested Butte, Colorado
Please take notice that the State of Colorado, Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety, Inactive Mine Reclamation Program has submitted an application for a Minor Impact Activity Watershed Permit to the Town of Crested Butte to close and reclaim 28 abandoned mines in the Crested Butte municipal watershed.
The purpose of this project, which will be conducted by a contractor working under the supervision of the Inactive Mine Reclamation Program, is to safeguard hazardous abandoned mines so that the public cannot enter these dangerous openings. All of the mines to be safeguarded by this project were small operations, likely active in the late 1800’s and abandoned shortly thereafter. None of the sites appear to present environmental issues, rather they represent a potential hazard to the public who may enter these mines and be injured as a result of the inherent dangers that accompany an abandoned mining operation.
The mines are located at elevations between 10,400 and 11,800 feet, and are generally clustered in the vicinity of the Irwin Lodge and in upper Elk Basin (above the Standard Mine). Three sites are located between these two clusters.
Legal descriptions of the locations of the hazardous abandoned mines to be safeguarded are as follows:
Upper Elk Basin:
SE ¼ NW ¼ Section 36 Township 13 South Range 87 West
NE ¼ NW ¼ Section 36 Township 13 South Range 87 West
