Lady Titans open league play with rout on the road

“I was psyched with the way we played”

The Crested Butte Lady Titans basketball team opened Southern Peaks league play with a 59-20 crushing of Centennial High School on Friday, December 12.

Granted, Centennial’s roster had only six players and by the fourth quarter they were down to four players due to injuries and fouls. Nonetheless, the game could have been much closer had the Lady Titans fallen into their old bad habits.
In years past, head coach MaryMike Haley has seen her team drop their game to match the ability of their opponent, therefore making a seemingly easy win much harder.
But on Friday, the Lady Titans stuck to their game plan putting four solid quarters of basketball together as Haley shuffled her bench players in for experience.
“I was psyched with the way we played,” says Haley. “I thought we did a great job of staying at our level of play and almost everybody on the team got a bucket.”
Crested Butte started the game with their press, opening up an early lead. From then on Haley eased up the pressure on Centennial and used the opportunity to have her squad continue work on their half-court play.
Senior Emma Vosburg led all scorers with 20 points, with senior Jessie Frame and junior Sydney Loyed adding 11 points each.
“Jessie Frame is getting more and more confident with every game,” says Haley, “and for her to get some confidence is huge for us.”
While a win is a win, Haley is still looking for her team to get pushed by opponents to prepare them for tougher games later in the season.
“We really need to be challenged,” says Haley. “We’re going to be in trouble if we’re not prepared when we play some of those teams from the Front Range.”
Crested Butte hits the road again this weekend to face league opponent Primero on Friday, December 19. Haley then takes her team to Longmont on the Front Range to face a JV team from 4A school Silver Creek.
