Slow pitch softball season opens June 1

There ain’t nothing better than softball in the Butte

Despite the recent weather patterns, summer officially begins in Crested Butte with opening day of the 2009 slow pitch softball season on Monday, June 1.
After repeating as recreational league champions last year, the Gas Holes return to the recreational league once again searching for a three-peat. The Gas Holes are a showcase for a potent slow-pitch mix with opposite field hitting, aggressive base running, and solid women in the field and at the plate, as well as huge fan support. Can anyone take them down?
The competitive league has nine teams signed up, including last year’s repeat champions the Lobar Rollers. The competitive league title is always up for grabs between at least three teams and often relies on who is on fire in the post-season. The past two years, it’s been the Lobar.
Last season the competitive league put home plate back into play, requiring players to touch the plate when scoring. This year, the powers that be decided to return to the “scoring line” in an effort to avoid injury at the home plate.
Competitive league games will be on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5 and 6:30 p.m.
Men’s league action will be on Fridays and with the loss of Tommy V Field, all rec league and comp league games will be held on Pitsker and Gothic Fields, and men’s league will be at Gothic Field.
As for bat regulations at Pitsker Field, men must hit with either wood bats or town-approved single-wall aluminum bats. Women can swing any bat they want.
