Pink Panthers face off in Aspen

Coming out hot

The Crested Butte U14 girls hockey squad traveled to Aspen this past weekend, competing in the annual Fall Face Off, where the MSGHL state’s top teams compete. The CB Squad finished the tournament in third place.
Crested Butte’s first game was an eye awakening 4-1 loss to Steamboat. Steamboat out-shot the Panthers 23 to 10. In the next game, the Panthers faced Aspen at their home rink. Crested Butte was out-shot again, this time 25 to 7, dropping the hard-fought game 2-0.
Round three pitted the Crested Butte girls team against Colorado Selects from Denver. These two teams met in last year’s state championship with Crested Butte taking state honors. It was not meant to be this time as Selects squeaked by 4-3, even though Crested Butte out shot their opponents 20 to 15. Both Selects and Crested Butte played for third place early Sunday morning. Crested Butte came out hot, peppering Selects 23 shots to seven and winning an impressive 5-1 victory to capture third place.
Later that afternoon Aspen, led by Ariana Buxman (two goals and one assist), skated past Steamboat 3-1 to capture the U14 FFA title.
Up next for the Panthers is the Gunnison Girls Tournament December 5-6.
