Crested Butte South POA distributes survey to tally Snodgrass sentiment

“We’re not writing another letter”

The Crested Butte South Property Owners Association held its regularly scheduled meeting on January 13 with a Snodgrass discussion on the agenda. The board members discussed whether or not they should write a second letter to the Forest Service supporting the proposed Snodgrass expansion moving into the NEPA process.

“After some discussion, the board decided we don’t want to stick our necks out and say we represent all the [Crested Butte South] homeowners,” said Association Manager Chris Behan. “We decided to put out a survey and let it speak for itself.” In Crested Butte South, 780 people own 915 total individual properties.
The survey is being distributed to Crested Butte South property and home owners and to residents via email; it is not accessible directly online and is “invitation only.” Only one response per email address is allowed and the survey is completely anonymous. However, if there is any question about whether people are responding multiple times, Behan can look at the database and make sure there is no funny business going on.
According to Behan, 560 of the surveys have gone out so far. As of mid-day Monday, January 25, 250 people had responded to the question “Do you support the proposed Snodgrass Expansion Project being accepted into the NEPA process?” Of the 250 responses, 191 were in favor, 55 were against, and 10 were neutral. The survey became active on Friday, January 15 and will run for about three weeks.
Crested Butte South property owner Stephanie Watkins owns Butte and Company in Mt. Crested Butte and The Slope in town. She had to dig through her junk mail to find the survey, she said, and hadn’t read it yet. The Crested Butte South POA email is used to “advertise yard sales” and things like that, Watkins said, so she didn’t pay much attention to it. Watkins didn’t have much of an opinion on the survey, but she did have something to say about the future of the town. “As a property owner, business owner and a mom, I want as many options open as possible. I’d really like to see things made available to us, whether it’s Snodgrass or something else in the future.”
If you live in Crested Butte South, didn’t get the survey and would like to, email Chris Behan at chris@cbsouth.net.
