Mountain Sports Team closes Southwest Series

Aaron Blunck stomps through weekend

The Crested Butte Mountain Sports Team closed the Southwest Series last weekend with three days of competition including a halfpipe event on Friday and two days of boardercross and skiercross action.
The event attracted more than 50 athletes from throughout the southwest region and was the last opportunity for athletes to qualify for the USASA Nationals in Copper in April.
When all was said and done, it was the Aaron Blunck show, as he won the skier halfpipe and both skiercross races, the first skiercross events he’s entered.
It all started for Blunck on Friday when he dominated the halfpipe.
“He stomped a cork 9 harder than I’ve seen,” says coach Woody Lindenmeyr. “It teetered on perfection.”
Blunck was primed to throw a 1260 as well, but his coach’s cooler head prevailed as he talked him down to a trick Blunck is more consistent with.
“I talked him down to a 10 [1080],” says Lindenmeyr. “We’re working on getting the 12 [1260] down for Nationals.”
Blunck then proceeded to win both skiercross races on Saturday and Sunday.
“It’s a great testament to his versatility in skiing,” says Lindenmeyr.
In fact, several of Lindenmeyr’s athletes stepped it up for the skiercross races and may be headed to Nationals when the final points from the season are in.
“I’m super pleased with how everyone performed,” says Lindenmeyr. “Everyone improved with every run down the track. I think we’ll qualify a few more.”
The USASA National Championships will be April 3-9 at Copper Mountain.
