Alpenglow might be a bit drier this year

And I don’t mean the weather

We are heading into Alpenglow season shortly and there will be a few changes to the popular summer concerts, including a reminder that open containers are not technically allowed or legal on the field where the audience watches the bands.

It is the 18th year for the Monday evening concert series, held outside on the south side of the Center for the Arts. There will be seven events starting in late June and running each Monday into August. Center for the Arts Director Jenny Birnie told the Crested Butte Town Council that last year attracted record attendance.
Birnie also told the council that this coming summer there will be one Alpenglow event in Crested Butte South, on August 16.
The Center applied for and received a special events liquor license for the Alpenglow shows from the Town Council on Monday evening. Center for the Arts bartenders will sell alcohol at two bars located on the perimeter of the field.
The idea is to come into compliance with Colorado liquor laws. Technically, all the picnics with cheese, crackers and an open bottle of Sauvignon Blanc or PBR have been against the law. Participants can still bring their own picnics but, legally, the alcohol will have to be purchased from the Center.
There will be Center staff at the events to gently remind imbibers of the change. “We will help inform people about the open container laws,” Birnie said, “and signs will be posted.”
Birnie said the event will also be upping its recycling efforts and has hired Gothic Mountain Waste Solutions to help make recycling a larger priority at the concerts. Port-a-potties will also be available on-site this year.
The concerts are free and start at 5:30 p.m.
The Town Council also approved special events for the summer that included the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory one-third marathon on the Fourth of July and Fat Tire Bike Week festivities. Let the summer fun begin.
