Rasta Hairnets hand Couch Petitos irie beat down

“Chase those crazy bald heads out of town”

Not that the Couch Petitos are crazy baldheads, by any means. It’s just so happens, that was the song coming from the Rasta Hairnets dugout sound system under a beautiful blazing evening sun as they warmed up for their rec league game against the Couch Petitos at Pitsker Field Tuesday.

As I mentioned before, the opening game of the 2010 season last week left an empty hole in my very being. It was what it was, but it was far from what I remembered slow pitch softball being all about. Maybe we need some vuvuzelas.
This week was one step closer to what slow pitch softball is all about. This kicker may have been when Rasta Hairnet player/manager Carlos Velado got the team together to introduce a couple new players to the team. Following the hasty introductions, the new players were each handed their complimentary Rasta tie dyed wife beater shirt uniform and told, “There’s beer in the cooler and…well that’s about it.”
No mention of the new rules, no question about where they might want to play, not even an explanation of the team’s name/purpose.
Just simply, “there’s beer in the cooler and… well that’s about it.”
Thank God for rec league.
The Rastas came out on fire in the top of the first inning slapping base hits around the field and scoring runs.
Velado and Nicky O’Connor opened the hitting with back-to-back base hits, rookie Rasta Phoebe Clift scored Velado on a single up the middle and Mountain Spirits Likker refugee Scott Tyree closed the early three-run assault roping a double to center.
The Petitos threatened to respond in the bottom of the first loading the bases but the Rasta defense clamped down to hold them scoreless, setting the stage for further offensive woes by the Petitos. Over the course of the next five innings, the Petitos would load the bases three more times only to come out scoreless.
Meanwhile the Rastas tacked on four more runs to build a 6-0 lead.
A defensive stand by the Petitos in the top of the fourth inning led by solid play from Sarah Block at second base kept the Rastas within striking distance going into the bottom of the fourth.
Block complemented her defensive work with some aggressive base running, scoring from first base on a single by Ben Reaman for the Petitos first run of the game.
Again the Rastas were held scoreless in the top of the fifth inning and the Petitos scored two more runs on doubles from Molly Frame and Maggie Dethloff cutting the Rasta lead in half.
O’Connor tapped another rbi hit to add an insurance run for the Rastas in the top of the sixth but it was starting to look like we had the makings of another classic Rasta/Petitos showdown.
But, alas, the Petitos loaded the bases once again in the bottom of the sixth inning only to leave all three “ducks on the pond.”
From there it got ugly as the Rastas unleashed on the Petitos. While the Petitos loaded the bases four times over the course of six innings and only produced three runs, the Rastas loaded the bases four times in the top of the seventh inning alone to produce 11 runs.
No matter what junk Petitos relief pitcher Mike Montano threw, the Rasta were unfettered in their punishment.
Recent Rasta acquisition Roman Kolodziej did a majority of the damage knocking in four runs on two base hits and scoring once and by the time it was over the Rastas finished off the Petitos 18-3.
