There is a new excitement out there about the potential for Crested Butte, Gunnison and/or Mt. Crested Butte to attract a stage of next year’s inaugural road bike race that will travel through Colorado in seven stages. The idea is to work together to land one of the host sites for the Quiznos Pro Challenge being promoted by Lance Armstrong and Bill Ritter.
The thought is that it will draw substantial business to the valley during a few weekdays in August. It will expose the area to more people. It will attract cycling enthusiasts here. The world will get a glimpse of a beautiful part of the state. More exposure, a business boost, a need to work together are three reasons to move ahead with this idea.
Now, this will take cooperation between public and private entities in the next four weeks and if successful, that cooperation will be needed for the next 12 months. It will take money. It will take talent and contributions. All those things can be found here and this might be a great event to pull everyone a little closer together.
The event itself would be top-notch and pro. It could bring a different flair to late summer in the valley. I remember the Munsingwear road races in the 1980s and it was pretty cool to watch. This could be even better.
If you want to get involved, there will be plenty of opportunity. In the meantime, here’s a shout out to those who seem to have immediately stepped up. We trust that the towns of Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte along with the city of Gunnison and the county will get behind the effort.
Let’s see where this road leads and if we’re lucky, it will be a road packed with a few hundred racers next August.
