Six student-athletes honored
Western State track and field has placed six women on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team. The Mountaineers placed three more student-athletes on the women’s team compared to last year’s team.
Hillory Davis, Casey Hagen, Katie Kielian, Lauren Kleppin, Cassandra Ortiz and Rachel Webb earned a spot on the team after achieving a provisional or qualifying mark while maintaining a grade point average greater than 3.25. The Mountaineers had the second-most selections among the RMAC schools.
Davis earned All-America honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and in cross-country. She finished fourth at the national championships in the steeplechase and has the second-fastest time in program history with 10 minutes, 26.90 seconds. She earned All-America cross-country honors as the top Mountaineer at the national championships with 21:52.1
Davis is pursuing a double major in exercise and sport science and psychology with an art minor.
Hagen earned six All-RMAC honors between the indoor and outdoor season. She finished her career with the program record in the 60-meter hurdles (8.97), third-best time in the 60-meter dash (7.77) and indoor pole vault (11-2 1/2) fifth-best time in the 100-meter dash (12.13) and ninth-best time in the outdoor 200-meter dash (25.60) and indoor 200-meter dash (26.30).
Hagen graduated this spring with a degree in business administration and minors in economics and art. She was a first-team member of both the indoor and outdoor RMAC All-Academic teams.
Kielian earned all-conference honors in the outdoor 400-meter dash in her first collegiate season. She was a member of the distance medley relay team that provisionally qualified with the program’s second-best time of 11:57.93. Kielian is pursuing a degree in interdisciplinary studies.
Kleppin was a participant at both the indoor and outdoor national championships and picked up All-America honors in the 10,000-meter run in May. In her first season with the Mountaineers, she’s among the top 10 leaders in the indoor 3,000-meter run, indoor 5,000-meter run and outdoor 10,000-meter run. Kleppin transferred from Colorado State prior to the academy year and is working toward an art degree.
Ortiz provisionally qualified in the 5,000-meter run at the Mt. SAC Relays and was a member of the seven-person team at the cross country national championships. She was also an all-conference student-athlete in the 1,500-meter run. Ortiz is working toward a degree in exercise and sport science.
Webb joined Kielian as a member of the distance medley relay that holds the second-fastest time in program history. She was an all-conference performer in the indoor season and a member of the cross country national championships team. Webb is pursuing a degree in environmental studies.
