Scheduled for court appearance November 3
The district attorney responsible for prosecutions in Gunnison County was arrested last week in Montrose on suspicion of unlawful sexual contact, indecent exposure and official misconduct.
Seventh Judicial District prosecutor Myrl Serra was released on $5,000 bond last Thursday, September 30. He has a court appearance scheduled for November 3, when prosecutors will detail the charges.
The case is under seal since it remains under investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. An attorney from the state attorney general’s office will act as special prosecutor against Serra.
Serra has in the past been criticized by some for going light on cases involving sex charges as a District Attorney.
A Tuesday article in the Denver Post documented Serra’s “legal skirmishes relating to a volatile on-again, off-again relationship he began with a married woman nine years ago. Two women on three occasions have tried unsuccessfully to secure restraining orders against Serra.”
The D.A.’s offices, including the one in Gunnison, have been taken over by the Colorado attorney general.
Serra was appointed to the D.A. position in 2008.
