All star hockey team closes fall season with two tournaments

Local Crested Butte hockey players Ben Barrett, Jack Collins, Cameron Curtiss, Gus Hensley and Ashton Mabry play for the Southwest Colorado Monsters (SWCM) Select Pee Wee A Hockey Team.
The Monsters earned a spot in the championship game this past weekend by winning games against Colorado Hockey Club, Littleton, Vail and Arvada in the semi-finals. The SWCM faced the Utah Jr. Grizzlies AA Team in the championship game, coming on strong through the first two periods with a 3-3 tie through the middle of the third period. The Monsters finished as runner-ups with a final score of 5-3.
Over Halloween weekend, the SWCM competed in the Fall Face-Off in Aspen earning second place. To reach the championship game, the SWCM defeated Northern Colorado Hockey Club, Colorado Springs Tigers, Aspen, and Boulder White in the semi-final earning a spot against Boulder Navy in the final game. The final game was hard fought with a 3-1 loss for the Monsters in the end.
As a new team, the SWCM wrap up their fall season with an impressive record of 15 and 2 with other teams are now whispering, “Who are these monsters?” The SWCM look forward to going into the regular hockey season with their respective communities, but will be back on strong in the spring for their next tournament over President’s Day weekend.
