Midwinter safety check. Stay aware but stop the dark season bitching… for at least a few minutes.
For some reason I always think of President’s Weekend as the turning point of the winter season. The days get noticeably longer and warmer. The snow can be consistent. The people arrive with a spring buzz. We are just a few weeks from that point. It is still cold out there. But hopefully it won’t stay that way for long.
It was three years ago we had an overabundance of the white. It started in December and the snow came all season. People were skiing lines not touched for 20 years. While we aren’t quite at that level yet, it isn’t bad. Apparently, La Niña is a blessing in a ski town and we seemed to be blessed.
I know coming out of the Funnel, Phoenix or Third Bowl, we are lucky to ski and ride this mountain. It is different from Breckenridge or Purgatory or Vail. Thank goodness. The traversing on the Extremes to get to a line is sometimes as good as the run itself. There is a different feeling on this hill. It makes me smile.
As we start to see light at the end of the winter’s tunnel, and we begin talking about summer events like Ride the Rockies, embrace the rest of this current season. It is a good one. Get out and ride it while you can and feel blessed.
We’ll be talking about fireworks soon enough.
