Long-time hospital administrators resign

Cashman and Marshall “move on in their professional endeavors”

Gunnison Valley Hospital recently saw the resignations of two of its long-time employees, chief financial officer Tim Cashman and Gunnison Valley Health (GVH) Foundation executive director and community relations director Dan Marshall.

“Both Tim and Dan indicated in their letter that they decided that it was time for them to move on in their professional endeavors,” GVH chief executive officer Randy Phelps said. “We are going to miss both Tim and Dan. Both have been loyal supporters of the mission of GVH, hard workers, and good friends.”
While neither vacancy has been filled, interim CFO Paul Zuidema of Fort Collins has been tapped to take over Cashman’s responsibilities starting May 1, while the recruitment effort continues. Phelps said the hospital has already received applications for the job.
The resignations of both Cashman and Marshall came just a few days apart.
“Plans for the replacement of the foundation director–community relations director have not been finalized at this time,” Phelps said.
For Marshall, who had been with GVH for nearly a decade, the job was a lot of work but rewarding, as the Gunnison Valley Hospital grew into the Gunnison Valley Health Foundation system and through the effort to re-brand the service.
While Marshall and his family are hoping to remain living in Crested Butte South, he said, “We’ll try to stick around, but home is where your family is and we’ll relocate if necessary.”
Cashman says after 25 years in the business and 15 years at the hospital, he’s “ready for a sabbatical,” before taking his skills elsewhere on the Western Slope to start something new.
“I just decided to leave the hospital on my own,” he says. “That’s the official reason and that’s the real reason.”
In 2008, when the hospital found itself buried by a growing number of unpaid, or underpaid, medical bills, Cashman was instrumental in finding ways of cutting costs and making ends meet once again.
Phelps says, “The hospital board, foundation board, and I wish Tim and Dan the very best in their future pursuits.”
