CB council election still shaping up

Mayor’s seat may have competition

Potential Crested Butte Town Council candidates have until Monday, August 22 at 5 p.m. to return a completed petition indicating they want to run for the town position. As of Tuesday, August 16 just one petition had been returned. That was from Jim Schmidt, who is running for mayor.

According to Crested Butte town clerk Eileen Hughes, four other people have taken a petition for council and/or mayor. Aaron Huckstep has picked up a petition and is considering running for either a council seat or mayor and Kevin McGruther is in the same boat. Two people who wanted to remain anonymous picked up petitions for council.
Because the town election will be part of the county mail-in ballot, the deadlines for petitioning are in August. Potential candidates only need to get 10 qualified Crested Butte voters to sign their petition before turning it in by Monday at 5 p.m.
