Officer threatened with bat

He wasn’t afraid of a gun…because he had a bat?

A 21-year-old Crested Butte man was arrested and charged with felony menacing last Thursday, September 8 after threatening an off-duty Crested Butte marshal with a baseball bat.

About 5 o’clock that afternoon, the man went to the home of a local police officer and started yelling for the officer to come outside. According to the police report, the man called the officer a “pig” and a “coward” and stated that he wasn’t afraid of the officer’s gun since he had brought a bat.
The officer came outside, unarmed, and the man continued yelling at the officer while waving the bat over his head.
The confrontation continued for a short time until the 21-year-old finally got back in his car and fled the residence. The officer advised other law enforcement units of the situation via radio.
The man was found driving near Red Lady Avenue and Sixth Street by Crested Butte Chief Marshal Tom Martin and Mt. Crested Butte police officers Anthony Burton and Brad Phelps. A baseball bat was seen on the front seat of the car. The young man was taken into custody and transported to the marshal’s office where the officer involved at the start of the confrontation confirmed the suspect was the man who had threatened him.
With the help of the Mt. Crested Butte police officers and Colorado State Patrol, the man was taken into custody and charged with felony menacing and driving under the influence of drugs. He has a court date scheduled for September 20 in Gunnison.
