Visiting skier dies on slopes early Wednesday morning

A 36-year-old male skier on vacation hit a tree on the slopes of Crested Butte Mountain Resort Wednesday morning and died due to trauma.

 

 

The skier, from Texas, was coming down Lower Gallowich about 10:35 a.m. when the accident occurred. Lower Gallowich is an intermediate run.
Details were sketchy as of press time, but according to a statement from the resort, the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. No one else was involved in the accident. Crested Butte Ski Patrol members responded immediately to the scene. The man was transported by the patrol to the Crested Butte Medical Center clinic in the base area where he was pronounced dead.
Under federal HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations, the resort could not release his name or further details of the accident.
“This is a tragic accident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the gentleman who passed away today,” said Erica Reiter, public relations and communications manager for CBMR.  
The Mt. Crested Butte police department had not filed a report by the time the News went to press.
