Early timeline could be a benefit
Crested Butte’s summer street resurfacing project will get a spring start thanks to the unusually warm and dry weather. Lacy Construction was awarded the bid to complete the $400,000 project and the company wants to start this Monday.
So, as part of the project, expect disruptions, detours and delays throughout town for about two to three weeks.
Streets affected by construction will include Elk Avenue, Whiterock, Second Street, Belleview, and Sixth. See the above map for specific sections.
Under a timeline submitted to the town, Lacy wants to begin milling Elk Avenue and Whiterock on Monday, April 30. Milling of the other streets would continue through Friday. Paving would start on Monday, May 7 and take a week. The streets could be closed during daytime hours between April 30 and May 11.
Elk Avenue will receive a two-inch asphalt overlay and will be closed from 4 a.m. until 10 a.m. Monday, April 30.
The other streets will get a “Full Depth Recycling” (FDR) treatment. The work may also include removal of existing sub-grade material on the streets where the road base is deemed to be unsuitable to support the new asphalt section. Those roads will be closed depending on work timing.
The Second and Elk Mountain Express bus stop will be temporarily relocated to in front of the Mountain Store since the bus won’t be going down Second Street once work begins.
Town public works director Rodney Due said the revised timeline by Lacy Construction could be great for the town. “The weather is cooperating and if they can get it done on this schedule, I think everyone will be happy,” Due said. “Look for trucks and diversions to begin on Monday, April 30.”
