Irwin Outfitters to offer summer outdoor options for teenagers

“Above all, be safe and have fun in the backcountry”

While many of the kids in the Gunnison Valley have spent a majority of time in the outdoors by the time they are teenagers, chances are they have not learned the basics of backcountry safety, protocol, or leadership skills.

Irwin Outfitters, in partnership with Crested Butte Mountain Guides, Scenic River Tours and the Adaptive Sports Center, is stepping in this summer to offer the opportunity for all kids ages 13 years and older for just such an experience, dubbed the Irwin Outdoor Youth Leadership Program.
The Irwin Outdoor Youth Leadership Program was designed by Billy Rankin, director of operations for Irwin Colorado. Rankin is an experienced guide, wilderness EMT, and a 15-year Outward Bound instructor. All Irwin guides are medically certified with exemplary safety skills and have extensive experience working with young adults.
“I felt like there was a need in the valley for teenage programming,” explains Rankin. “Parents have been telling me their kids are leaving Crested Butte and they don’t know simple backcountry skills or protocols.”
The program provides a litany of trips—Stand Up Paddle boarding and river running, hiking, climbing peaks, and rock climbing, as well as a four-day backpacking trip.
“We will provide a comprehensive experience in the backcountry, teaching the skills involved with specific activities,” says Rankin. “Not just the fun and adrenaline but the skills behind it. More of a holistic approach to experiencing the backcountry and the outdoors.”
Rankin and the staff will offer instruction in everything from reading a map and compass, to how to cross a river safely, what to do during lightning or bear encounters, to camping skills following the Leave No Trace mantra.
Furthermore, Rankin sees the program as an opportunity for some of the older kids to get an introduction to a career in outdoor education.
“For older kids it will be an opportunity to learn outdoor education and guiding skills with leadership opportunities,” says Rankin, “These are especially valuable for someone going down that career path.”
Registration is currently open and for information and/or to register check out irwincolorado.com or contact Billy Rankin, [email protected] or call (970) 275-2745.
“It will be something exciting and fun for kids to do in the summer,” says Rankin. “Above all, seek real adventure, have fun, and be safe in the backcountry.”
