WSCU women’s soccer finish spring undefeated

Looking forward to fall season

The Western State Colorado University women’s soccer team ended their 2013 spring soccer season on Sunday on Gateway Field in Gunnison with a victory over the New Mexico Rush club soccer team. The Mountaineers played four scrimmages this spring, earning victories in two and finishing with two draws.
“I am very proud of my young team. We have come a long way,” head coach Jeremy Clevenger said. ”I think it is a great accomplishment to finish our spring season undefeated and I can’t say enough about the character and work ethic of these ladies.”

The Mountaineers defeated the Rush squad in part by a terrific effort in goal by Meghan Jedrzejewski (Fr., Longmont, Colo.), who accumulated seven saves.

Arianna Brennan (Fr., Arvada, Colo.) also contributed to maintaining the Mountaineers’ undefeated spring season by placing a ball in the back of the net during the second half.

Fans were packed along the sidelines to cheer on the Western State Mountaineers in their first home game since October 3, 2012.

The Mountaineers will look to carry over their success this spring to the regular season in the fall of 2013. Western State will face UT-Permian Basin in their first game of 2013 on September 6 in Santa Fe, N.M.
“You can start to see the transformation of this team building into something special,” Clevenger said. “This team has represented the first-ever WSCU soccer team well and I am looking forward to seeing what other accomplishments we can reach.”

Prior to the scrimmage on Sunday, the women’s soccer team held a free youth clinic. More than 80 kids participated in the clinic, learning techniques from players and coaches.
