On pace to take NCAA Division II high jump title
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USFTCCCA) announced the 2013 Division II Outdoor Track & Field Regional Award winners Monday, and Western State Colorado University student-athlete Barbara Szabo (Jr., Budapest, Hungary) was named the South Central Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year.
Szabo leads all Division II student-athletes in the women’s high jump with a clearance of 6’ 2.25” (1.89m), placing her second among all collegians and No. 6 in Division II history. She was named RMAC Field Athlete of the Year, and claimed the high jump title with a meet-record 6’ 2” (1.88m) clearance along with a third-place finish in the triple jump and a pair of fifth-place showings in the javelin and long jump.
Szabo will compete at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo. on May 23-25. The women’s high jump is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 25.
Szabo is a three-time RMAC outdoor women’s high jump champion and a three-time indoor women’s high jump national champion. At last year’s outdoor championships, Szabo finished runner-up to teammate Susan Jackson. Szabo’s mark of 1.89 meters currently ranks her 12th in the world by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in the outdoor women’s high jump. Szabo cleared 1.92 meters (6’ 3.5”) in the high jump earlier during the indoor season, which is the third highest mark ever in Division II.
