WSCU women’s soccer takes two at Gateway Field

Set records in 7-0 blow out

The Western State Colorado University women’s soccer team won their home opener on Friday and followed with a blowout win on Sunday to bring their record to 3-1-0.
The Mountaineers defeated Texas A&M–International 1-0 in Gunnison on Friday—the first win at Gateway Field for the second-year program, having lost all three opportunities in 2012.

 Western (2-1-0, 0-0-0 RMAC) scored the game winner just 23 minutes into the first half. Courtnee Urrea (Fr., Albuquerque, N.M.) scored the game winner after being set up by a pass by Izzy Engeman (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo.).


The Mountaineers dominated for long stretches of the game and held the Dust Devils without a shot in the first half. Ultimately, the Mountaineers would outshoot TAMIU 26-4. Goalie Meghan Jedrzejewski (So., Longmont, Colo.) picked up her first clean sheet of the season, contributing two saves to the Western victory.


The WSCU women followed up with a record breaking Sunday afternoon at Gateway Field. The Mountaineer offense exploded for seven goals and 44 shots as the Western women’s soccer team rolled over Johnson & Wales University 7-0.


Western (3-1-0, 0-0-0 RMAC) opened the scoring in the tenth minute on an Elise Boisnard (Fr., Lakewood, Colo.) goal. The Mountaineers headed into halftime with a 3-0 lead after Sadie Stark (So., Milliken, Colo.) added two goals of her own. 

The Mountaineers changed player personnel in the second half but the offensive onslaught continued. Katelyn Mardeusz (Fr., Cave Creek, Ariz.) helped the Western cause with two goals of her own, while teammate Brianna Vega (So., Vallejo, Calif.) scored one. Midfielder Elyza Montano (So., El Sobrante, Calif.) converted a penalty kick after being taken down in the Johnson & Wales (0-6-0) box.


The Mountaineers will be on the road for the next game on Friday, September 20 when they face Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent Metro State in Denver and then return home to face UC–Colorado Springs on Sunday, September 22 at 1 p.m.
