Wolfpack continues on winning streak

“It was so fun to watch”

The Crested Butte Wolfpack hockey team continued to rattle off league wins taking two from the San Juan Wild in Telluride this past weekend.
More importantly, not only did they get the wins but also they played some of their best hockey to date to put together six total periods of complete domination against a quality program.
“We had the systems working well and everything was rolling,” says coach Steve Curtiss. “We dominated all aspects of play.”
Crested Butte faced the Wild earlier this season and while they won that first match up, the last two were completely different.
“We played a lot better this time,” says Curtiss. “They were chasing us instead of us chasing them.”
Curtiss could tell the Wolfpack was firing on all pistons from the start of the weekend and believes the difference in the games came from the team’s attention to the smaller aspects of hockey.
“From the first shift of the first game we felt good,” says Curtiss. “The game starts with winning every little battle and we won all of the little battles.”
Even when the Wolfpack fell behind 1-0 in the first period of the first game, the Wolfpack and their coaching staff was far from panicked and continued with their game plan.
They tied it up in the second period on a powerplay when Sam Reaman scored off an assist by Dakota Wiggins and then took the lead early in the third period on a goal by Ian Dethloff.
With the Wolfpack defense doing their job and Crested Butte continuing to carry the pace of the game, they ended up finishing with a 2-1 win; outshooting the Wild 35-12.
The second game of the day played out much like the first as the Wolfpack dominated all aspects of the game to finish with another 2-1 win. After a scoreless first period, the Wolfpack built a 2-0 lead in the second on goals by Dethloff and Reaman again. The Wild cut into the lead in the third period scoring on a powerplay but all systems were still running smoothly to carry Crested Butte to the win.
“It was so fun to watch,” says Curtiss. “They were doing exactly what we had been practicing.”
The Wolfpack will host the Colorado Junior Eagles this Saturday, February 1 at Big Mine Ice Arena at 4 and 8:30 p.m. The Junior Eagles are a non-league opponent and the coaches are looking to test their mettle against one of the top programs in the state.
“Now that we’ve had a lot more practices it will be good to see how we stack up against them,” says Curtiss. “They’re good level of competition.”
The Wolfpack returns to league play the following weekend hosting more teams from the Front Range.
“As long as we continue to play well, we should finish top four in the league,” says Curtiss.
