It’s warming up but CB’s ice is still strong
The Big Mine Ice Arena is not yet done for the season. According to Jake Jones, Parks and Recreation director, “There is still some life left in this year.” He said the staff would shave down the ice and open the rink up through spring break. “The crew is doing a great job.”
“It’s absolutely great to see it still going and in such good shape this late into the year,” commented Councilman Roland Mason.

New town planner planning to start work this spring
Town Manager Todd Crossett told the council on March 17 that he has hired a new town planner. Michael Yerman, who works in a similar position in Salida, will take the position. He won’t start officially until early May while he finishes some work over the Divide.

Another retail marijuana store opening
Council approved a new recreational marijuana store. The SOMA Wellness Center was given the okay to open in the old Radio Shack building on Belleview. Proprietor Lee Olesen said he and his partner have a similar operation in Boulder.

Ted Conner retiring.
Assistant Chief Marshal Ted Conner announced his retirement, effective June 30. The council gave the okay to Chief Marshal Tom Martin to immediately begin the hiring process, which will likely require sending someone to the training academy.
“Is it absolutely necessary to have that many officers?” asked Councilman David Owen.
“I feel strongly about that,” answered Martin. “We could go to eight before we go to six. Plus replacing Ted will be monumental. He does the work of one-and-a-half officers. We certainly will need seven officers at a minimum.”

Town gives the nod to volunteers
The council declared April 1 as National Service Recognition Day in honor of all the volunteers who help do the things they do to make the town what it is.
