Developers hoping for new, large music venue in downtown Crested Butte

500-person live music spot?

What could be one of Crested Butte’s most expensive and extensive high-profile renovations is working its way through the town building process.

A  development group that purchased the old Grubstake Building at the corner of Third and Elk may renovate the building starting this summer and turn it into a bar/restaurant/music hall. The project is currently before the Crested Butte Board of Zoning and Architectural Review (BOZAR) and will be discussed at the next BOZAR meeting on Tuesday, March 25.
Under the proposed plan, the developers hope to demolish the rear portion of the historic building and add on to the back of the building. The stores on the south side of the building would be closed and incorporated into the overall development plan. The music hall portion of the future bar and restaurant would be built to accommodate approximately 500 people—picture the Fillmore in Denver or the Belly Up in Aspen.
As part of the approval, the applicant is requesting up to 55 payment-in-lieu-of parking spaces or the ability to provide suitable off-street parking, to be reviewed at a later date. Currently, each parking-in-lieu space costs $13,000.
Members of the development team did not want to publicly comment or release information on the proposal.
The BOZAR meeting begins Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Town Hall. Contact the Building Department at 349-5338 for a more detailed start time for this project.
