Six named all-Americans
The Western State Colorado University track and field teams wrapped up the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. The Mountaineers ended the season with one national champion and six All-Americans.
As a team, the Mountaineer women finished 13th, while the men placed 16th.
Barbara Szabo (Sr., Budapest, Hungary) earned her sixth career national championship and is tied with Alisha Williams for the most women’s career track and field national championships in Western history. Szabo successfully defended her outdoor women’s high jump title by clearing 1.91 meters (6’ 3.25”).
Fellow high jumper Susan Jackson (Sr., Napa, Calif.) finished runner-up to Szabo, also clearing 1.91 meters (6’ 3.25”). Jackson ended her career with four All-American titles and one national championship. Jackson won the outdoor women’s high jump title in 2012.
In the men’s 1,500 meters, Keifer Johnson (RFr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) earned All-American status by finishing fourth. Johnson ran the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:48.06. Also running in the 5,000 meters on Saturday, Johnson placed 12th with a time of 14:24.06.
Also earning an All-American title Saturday was Robin Butler (So., Fort Collins, Colo.) in the men’s 800 meters. Butler finished second and nearly took the title, finishing in a time of 1:48.50, just 0.18 seconds off Ashland’s Drew Windle.
