Five hats thrown in the ring to replace Owen on Town Council

Merck, Berkshire, Voegeli, Horne and Merck

Five Crested Butte residents have sent letters of interest to the town of Crested Butte expressing a desire to replace David Owen on the Town Council. Owen resigned in late October for personal business reasons.

Asking to be considered to take the seat are Shaun Horne, Paul Merck, Lisa Merck, Mark Voegeli and Skip Berkshire.
The council will hold a special meeting on Thursday, November 20 at 5 p.m. to allow the candidates to make their case and answer questions from the sitting council. The council will then vote by secret ballot until there is a majority result. Once a decision is made, a puff of white smoke will be sent up the town’s old coal flume in town hall.
The lucky winner will then be presented with a heavy schedule of meetings in early December, ranging from setting council goals for 2015, to reviewing the town manager performance, listening to the public weigh in on the successes and failures of the Bud Light Whatever event and getting a first glance at a potential annexation.
But hey, there is some solace in being paid $400 a month.
Former councilperson Margot Levy asked the council to consider someone who could step into Owens’ shoes in the affordable housing realm. Owens sat on several boards that deal with the topic and Levy said he has been a valuable contributor.
