“The greatest opportunity is for GVH to be a strong player in Crested Butte”
Gunnison Valley Health has purchased the Crested Butte Mountain Clinic from Dr. Roger Sherman with plans to lease the clinic space and have the new operation up and running by the start of ski season.
Gunnison Valley Health CEO Rob Santilli told the county commissioners at a meeting on Tuesday, November 4 that the GVH board has been interested in expanding its medical services at the north end of the valley beyond the GVH rehabilitation offices currently in the Ore Bucket Building.
The Mountain Clinic has an established presence at the Crested Butte Mountain Resort base area and has an exclusive agreement with CBMR to get ski patrol sled traffic through 2023. With all that the clinic has to offer, a consultant hired by GVH gave it a value of between $970,000 and $1,075,000.
“We believe this service is one that we can get started before the ski season and really build on the service that is currently there and also expand the service,” Santilli said. “Right now the service closes at the end of the ski season. Our intent is to match the timing that the resort is open.”
Santilli said, given the increased summertime traffic at CBMR, the resort could be an opportunity to keep the clinic open whenever CBMR is running the lifts. Santilli added that buying the clinic would help give the GVH brand a stronger presence at the resort and could offer an opportunity to bring patients in for orthopedic care and rehabilitation, as well as see what other opportunities for growth might be out there.
“To me this is somewhat of a launching pad to really understand how we can partner with the current medical programs that are up in Crested Butte and see if we can’t support them in a way that’s collaborative,” Santilli said. “We’ve got a disconnected rehab service up there and can we match that up and is there potential in other areas of sports medicine or high altitude training. At this point the greatest opportunity is for GVH to be a strong player in Crested Butte.”
The commissioners approved the plan.
