Young skier dies at ski resort

A young skier visiting Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) died last week as the result of an incident on the intermediate trail, Lower Treasury. In a statement, CBMR spokesperson Scott Clarkson confirmed that the unfortunate incident took place around 2 p.m. on Friday, January 23.

“Crested Butte Ski Patrol responded immediately upon notice. The skier was transported by Crested Butte Ski Patrol to Gunnison Valley Hospital Mountain Clinic at the base of the ski area. The skier was pronounced dead at the medical facility,” the statement read.
The Montrose Daily Press identified the skier was Olathe Middle School eighth-grader Luis Olide, 13.
So far, the accident is presumed to have been un-witnessed because no one has come forward to indicate that they saw it happen. Yet Gunnison County coroner Frank Vader says that preliminary autopsy results provided some answers.
“It helped confirm that he was in fact wearing a helmet,” Vader said adding that Olide’s death has been attributed to multiple traumatic chest injuries, indicating that he most likely ran into a tree.
On behalf of CBMR, Clarkson said, “This is a tragic accident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the individual who passed away.” He later added that any situation in which an accident results in death is heart-wrenching, especially when the victim is so young.
Mt. Crested Butte Police Department spokesperson Marge Trautman confirmed that the Mt. Crested Butte Police are investigating the incident, but it is not yet public record.
Clarkson said the tragedy provides a reminder to always ski with a buddy and be aware of snow conditions, particularly with the lack of new snow. “With conditions being rather flat out there I think people need to take extra precaution when skiing and riding,” he said. “Be aware and ski with care.”
