Winter camper rescued from Cement Creek area

Unprepared for cold

A 20-year-old Michigan man attempting to camp out Cement Creek drainage was contacted by search and rescue last week, on Saturday, February 28, after his whereabouts were reported to Gunnison Dispatch. According to Mt. Crested Butte Police spokesperson Marge Trautman, the reporting party said an individual was camping in a tent in an area where snowmobiles typically turn around.

“When asked, the male inside the tent said he was not alright and very cold,” Trautman told the News by email. “The Mt. Crested Butte Police called on Crested Butte Search and Rescue for assistance, and the Michigan man was brought out of the wilderness.”
According to Trautman, the man told the responding police officer that his plan had been to camp for the winter but he hadn’t been prepared with the right equipment. He was cleared medically and the officer arranged for the camper to stay at the hostel for the night.
