Elk Avenue paving could happen Tuesday

The fat lady is still warming up…

There is a good chance Elk Avenue will get a three-quarter inch asphalt overlay on Tuesday, September 8. It would be the final step from last year’s Whatever USA event that took place a year ago. After the event, a paint snafu resulted in deep grooves in three blocks of Elk Avenue. This overlay is meant to be the final repair from the promotional event.

United Paving is contracted to do the work and it was originally scheduled to happen Thursday, September 3. But work in Meeker delayed United and the town did not want to close Elk Avenue the Friday of Labor Day Weekend. So it is now scheduled for Tuesday. The forecast for Tuesday is calling for sunny skies. What could go wrong?

Due to the scheduled roadwork on Elk Avenue, the Mountain Express Town Shuttle will experience a route diversion and bus stop closures on Tuesday.

During the Elk Avenue closure the Town Shuttle will not serve the downtown Crested Butte bus stops. These stops include Old Town Hall, the Nordic Center, and Whiterock Avenue. The shuttle will come into Crested Butte from Mt. Crested Butte and stop at Teocalli and the 4-Way Stop then proceed to 6th and Belleview.

Elk Avenue may not open until as late as 6 p.m. Regular service will resume once Elk Avenue opens.
